We don’t anchor the buildings ourselves – Reasons briefly explained for us not providing this as a service – genuine honest answer from us as the primary reason why we do not is if we did anchor our buildings down and the worst storm came that is strong enough to takes trees that have stood for a hundred years and roofs from houses – we would still likely be accused by some for not anchoring them down well enough.
Ground conditions vary throughout different geographical parts of the UK and vary further at different times of year (wetter months softer ground). We wouldn’t want to say we could sledgehammer in 4/6 ground anchors to find the ground was too hard for ‘man tools’ on any given day. We also find that most land for grazing/paddocks is leased and not owned (although this often equally applies to many landowners) and people don’t often know where any services if any run underneath. Gas electric and water can cause obvious issues if their location is not known. That said we know of many of our buildings that have been anchored and have very good stats with regards to storm damage so do know which methods work well. We of course always advise the anchoring of our buildings and will also offer advice on the day of the build of where the team erecting thinks it should be situated within a given space.
Our own choice as the preferred/best option against storm/wind gusts if you are in a windy or very open area is simple timber fence stakes driven in on corners which can then be screwed to the skids or framework. That’s what we have seen as the most effective method as well as the most cost- efficient way. There are also a few companies that you can buy fancy ‘corkscrew’ style hurricane anchors. They do also work well and are driven in by sledgehammer and bracket to the skids but the wooden stakes have the same effect for much less cost.
